Wings

Sometimes my favorite pieces of art show up when I just let colors and brushes play together. I don’t usually reach for pink, but something in the day made me want to experiment with it, see what it could do alongside a quieter peach and a joyful yellow. (Isn’t yellow always joyful? : )

Next thing I knew, the fan brush got involved making dozens and dozens of butterfly wings across the page, and I kept thinking of the butterflies that visit our flower garden in the summer and fall, the beauty of their wings making us run for the windows to gawk, and to the field guide books to discover their names.

Wild Garden

Wild Garden emerged from a paint session in which I played with different colors than I ordinarily use. It was really fun to brush and smear the colors on the board and just see where they would take me. I love the result! I love this Wild Garden! And the products made from it look so much better in person than they do in these pictures.

I honestly can’t get over the note cards! Swoon! And what do you think of the front-and-back open effect on the notebook and notecards? What do you see there?

Jellyfish

One afternoon in the studio I was mixing up some paint, creating a whole range of blue from light to dark. After playing for awhile with brushes and household materials, I paused a moment, then realized I was staring at a deep ocean filled with sea creatures! And above them all, several jellyfish were floating serenely along.

Bermuda Shores

I love the sheer minimalist beauty of color and texture on this one. Bermuda waters are known for their beautiful blues, but right next to them are absolutely gorgeous sea greens. Here, humble brushstrokes make tiny air bubbles where sea turtles come to the surface. A bird flying over would spy a small white line of ragged foam far below.

Oh, I had fun painting this one! Lately I’ve been experimenting with new palettes and different brushstrokes. One result was this lovely, energetic, and upscale-looking design. I’m just enamored with it! All the movement. The contrast. The colors!

Lantern

This piece has so much energy, so much movement, that whenever I am near it, it always captures my eye. It was named for the lantern that sends its light upwards into the all the activity.

Moon Mountain

Purples and pinks and the roughness of wood turned into a fantasy world, where snow blows hard across a distant mountain. Twin moons rise slowly, one dark and one light. I wonder if someone is on the mountain watching them rise.

Pink Marshmallow

I should have named this one Pink Surprise because as it came together it surprised me! The different colors and shapes and textures—along with the unexpected appearance of the color of wood in the middle of them—taken as a whole they seem to want to tell a story.
